Resilient Bospolder-Tussendijken

In the Resilient Bospolder-Tussendijken 2028 programme (BoTu 2028), the municipality of Rotterdam, the residents and a variety of partners in the district are working closely together on major improvements for Bospolder-Tussendijken (BoTu). Its goal: for BoTu to be the first resilient district of Rotterdam in 10 years’ time. In figures, this means that BoTu's social index should increase to the urban social average within ten years. In 2018, the social index value for Bospolder was 94, while the index for Tussendijken was 84. The Rotterdam average was 105. The social index is divided into four themes: capacities, environment, participation and bonding. The ‘overall quality of life’ indicates how people judge the quality of their own life. In BoTu, the differences when compared to the Rotterdam average are significant for virtually all themes, especially in Tussendijken.

New forms of cooperation, innovative methods

The programme has an open character and should be considered the start of a process that involves working together with a number of partners to increase the quality of life, the participation and the capacities in the district. This creates room for new forms of collaboration between municipalities and partners and between the partners themselves. There is also plenty of room for experimentation.

Complete and systematic solutions

The purpose of ' Social Impact by Design'  is to facilitate a process involving finding systematic solutions that will turn BoTu into a resilient area. It is all about new forms of collaboration between the market, society and government. Through a Call for Action, creative entrepreneurs, citizens, private parties and other organisations are invited to (financially) contribute to complete and systematic solutions that will turn BoTu into a resilient area. This will be achieved through a controlled process with different stages. First, several teams are put together, then, in a number of successive stages, it is investigated whether the ideas have scope and whether they can be financed and are actually feasible.

Launch of Resilient BoTu

The Resilient BoTu 2028 was launched on Tuesday 9 April 2019. The participants signed the license agreement and Mayor Aboutaleb announced the Call for Action.

Call for Action

The coalition involved in Resilient BoTu 2028 consists of the municipality of Rotterdam, housing corporation Havensteder, Delfshaven Coöperatie, IABR and consultancy Rebel. But these parties cannot go it alone. That is why there was a Call for Action to all creative entrepreneurs, businesses and citizens, asking for contributions to the realisation of this ambition. Contributions that can be in the shape of talent, knowledge and/or capital.

Taking part in Veerkrachtig BoTu allows citizens to make a contribution to society. This also applies to creative entrepreneurs and companies, giving them the opportunity to show their commitment to corporate social responsibility at the same time. The starting point for the approach to BoTu is a well-organised early cooperation between all parties.

Following the Call for Action, a busy information evening was held mid-May 2019, with many enthusiastic, interested companies, institutions and citizens in attendance.
